چکیده

HEURISTIC SEARCH UNDER A DEADLINE by Austin Dionne University of New Hampshire, May, 2011 In many heuristic search problems of practical interest, insufficient time is available to find a provably optimal solution. The currently accepted methods of finding a best possible sub-optimal solution within a time deadline are the anytime methods which do not directly consider the time remaining in the search. My thesis is that a deadline-cognizant approach, one which attempts to expend all available search effort towards a single final solution, has the potential for outperforming these methods. To support this thesis I introduce two new deadline-cognizant algorithms: Deadline Aware Search and Deadline Decision Theoretic Search. These approaches use on-line measurements of search behavior to guide the search towards the best possible solution reachable before the deadline. An empirical analysis illustrates that DAS is capable of outperforming the current incumbent methods across a wide variety of domains, the first deadline-cognizant heuristic search algorithm to do so.

A Heuristic Algorithm for Project Scheduling Problem to Maximizing the Net Present Value

This paper deals with resource unconstrained project scheduling problems with the objective of maximizing the net present value (NPV) of project cash flows. Here we present a heuristic algorithm named as differential procedure (Dif_AOA).&#10In order to evaluate the efficiency of this algorithm, networks with node numbers between 10-1000 and network complexity coefficients between 1.3-6.6 have ...

Deadline-Aware Search Using On-Line Measures of Behavior

In many applications of heuristic search, insufficient time is available to find provably optimal solutions. We consider the contract search problem: finding the best solution possible within a given time limit. The conventional approach to this problem is to use an interruptible anytime algorithm. Such algorithms return a sequence of improving solutions until interuppted and do not consider th...

Real-Time Adaptive A* with Depression Avoidance

Real-time search is a well known approach to solving search problems under tight time constraints. Recently, it has been shown that LSS-LRTA∗, a well-known real-time search algorithm, can be improved when search is actively guided away of depressions. In this paper we investigate whether or not RTAA∗ can be improved in the same manner. We propose aRTAA∗ and daRTAA∗, two algorithms based on RTAA...

Minimizing Response Times in Real Time Planning and Search

Real time artificial intelligence (AI) systems are required to respond within a given deadline, or have optimal response times. While some researchers have addressed the issue of planning under deadline constraints, there has been very little research towards optimizing the response time of problem-solving methods. The costs for a response consists of the cost to plan for a solution and the cos...
